#FeelOnTheFirst : How to do a Breast Self-exam

on September 30, 2021

When it comes to breast cancer, it is important to empower yourself and take control of your health. Handful encourages women’s wellness and invites you to join our breast cancer awareness efforts by learning how to give yourself a breast exam.

‘Feel on the First,’ is a women's wellness program from Handful Activewear that offers a friendly way of reminding you to do your breast self-exam on the first day of each month.

Doing this simple exam each month is the best way for early detection in the beginning stages of breast cancer - Here are three ways the National Breast Cancer Association suggests for your monthly breast self-exam. Choose the whichever option that works best for you each month for early detection of breast cancer.

How to do a Breast Self-Exam

  1. Shower – Using the flat part and pads of your 3 middle fingers, thoroughly check your breast and armpit area by pressing down. Look for lumps or knots, thickening, or any other breast changes each month.

  2. Mirror – Standing in front of the mirror with both arms at your sides, look at each breast for any swelling or dimples of the skin. Also examine nipples for any changes from the prior month. Next, raise your arms over head your head and repeat the visual exam. Finally, put your hands on your hips, press firmly, flexing the muscles in your chest and repeat the visual exam.

  3. In Bed – While lying on your bed, put a pillow under your head, right shoulder, and right arm. Use the middle three fingers of your left hand to examine your right breast and right armpit. Apply pressure to check for lumps and squeeze the nipple to ensure there is no discharge. Repeat for left side breast exam.

Empower Yourself With Early Detection and Feel on the First with Handful Activewear

Women’s wellness and breast cancer awareness is a large focus for our company, and we are proud to support our valued customers who are breast cancer survivors. We have partnered with YSC®, (Young Survival Coalition) to donate 12.5% of revenue from our ‘Battle Cry’ Pink bra sales to recognize the 1 in 8 women (12.5) who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

We are also proud to offer our Breast Friends Forever program, which was specially created to offer breast cancer survivors a 30% discount (for life) on all Handful bras and activewear. In addition, all survivors who have lost a breast to cancer will receive free pad sets (for life) that can be stacked and used as prosthetics in any pocketed Handful bra.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation indicates that “Forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important.”

From diagnosis through treatment… and beyond, Handful is here to support our customers through the fight of their life with breast cancer awareness programs.

Handful is here to support you, ladies, so don’t forget to #FeelOnTheFirst of every month!
